Vasanth panchami is an auspicious day which ushers in the celebration of spring. Sarasvati is honored on this day of Vasant Panchami, the fifth day of the waxing Moon pronouncing the growing light of creativity and knowledge. Sarasvati weaves the thread of sacredness through learning, art and creativity as a flow of deeper awareness.
Vasant Panchami is dedicated to Sri Sarasvati, the Goddess of knowledge, music, fine arts, science and technology. Goddess Saraswati is worshipped on Vasant Panchami day, also known as Shri Panchami and Sarasvati Panchami.
Sarasvati is the goddess of the spoken word or Vak Shakti, weaving a garland of musical poetry, mantra Shakti and our expression of truth. Vak is an expression of our thoughts and actions ritualized. Our outer lives must resonate an inner truth. Vak Shakti endows us with the auspiciousness of the transcendent nature of the divine feminine spirit.
Worshipping Sarasvati Devi awakens the power of consciousness within us revealing the inner flow of creativity, wisdom and ananda or pure delight. In Vedic thought Sarasvati Devi is revered as Veda Mata, the Goddess with the inner white Light of divinity. Light represents power of consciousness which rests in the stillness of our thoughts, heart and mind.
Sarasvati Puja and Vasant Panchami
Ushering in the Springtime we clean our homes and decorate it with auspicious symbols, and yellow flowers, representing the vibrancy of life after the winter months. Yellow flowers are offered to the Mother Goddess with a special prasada of kesar halva made with saffron, flour, sugar, cardamom and nuts.Worshiping Sarasvati entails an honoring of one’s creativity and art. Children perform a simple puja of their school books and educational tools. In India children create Sarasvati dolls and take them to school. These innocent delightful forms of worship elevate the mind and heart, bringing our awareness to the divine role in our artistic and knowledge world.
Sarasvati puja includes simple beautiful rituals and mantra chanting in praise of Sarasvati Devi. In this deep reverence for the Goddess we create a calm, peaceful and compassionate space for drawing in the wisdom. Young children are initiated into their first introduction of the Sanskrit alphabets and the art of writing, highlighting a celebration initiating one into the world of learning with divinity, joyousness and delight. This ritual of initiating education to children is known as Akshar-Abhyasam or Vidya-Arambham.
