Meaning of the Word SANKRATHI
Sankranthi (or) Makar Sankranthi is celebrated as very
Important Festival across the country India.
The word “Sankranthi” means “movement” as the Everything
that we recognize as life is considered as movement. Fortunately, People who
came before us have moved on and people who came after us are waiting for us to
move on. Everything on the planet is related to moving.
The word “shankara” is Related to Lord Shiva. It is still
one, Stillness of the movement. The Sun is rotating not Moving. Through all the
planets in the solar system is moving the important one is not moving. If its
moving there will no existing of living on these planet.
Significance
The significance of maker sankranthi festival is that it
marks the day where there is a signficant movement in the zodiac-(the
arrangement of earth’s dial around the sun) and these zodiac movement brings
about a new change in the way we experience the planet itself.

- Makar Sankranthi

Most Festivals in the Hinduism follows the position of the
moon are based of the lunar calendar. Thus, the dates of the festivals changes
every year. But, the Sankranthi is the Festival which falls on the same day
every year as it follows the solar calendar as its based on the position of the
sun. However, once in every eight years, due to revolution, the day is
postponed to one day. Sankranthi is celebrated on 14th of every year
(sometimes 15th January)
- The Sun enters the Sun-sign of Capricorn or Makara on these day . Litterally, the word “Sankranthi” means the movement of one zodiac sign to other . Today its enter into Makara Zodiac . So, its celebrated as the Makara Sankranthi.

- Makar Sankranthi is the Festival of til-gul where sesame and jiggery ladoos are distributed among all. As the Festival falls on the winter Season the eating of sesame& jiggery is considered as beneficial to health as they are warm foods.
- It usually marks the beginning of Kumbh Mela in Uttar Pradesh. In Kerala on of the most austere and difficult pilgrimages of sabarimala ends on these auspicious day.
